3 ways to use essential oils for great workplace wellbeing

Last May I felt rubbish. I caught bug after bug, had no energy and needed to take time off work.

But now I feel amazing!

So what changed?

I started using essential oils.

My friend came to the rescue bringing a diffuser, oils galore and a wealth of scientific knowledge and experience. So I knew I was in good hands.

And I can honestly say I have more energy, focus better at work, and my house (i.e. my workplace) smells divine.

Here are 3 ways you can boost your workplace wellbeing using essential oils, whether you’re working from home or not…

 

1. Energise with peppermint oil

Peppermint is one of my favourite oils. Not only does it smell gorgeous, but it makes you feel alive! The scent of peppermint – you know, that bright, cool, herbal aroma – stimulates the hippocampus in the brain (the area responsible for controlling mental clarity and memory) making you wake up.

I often start the day with a blend of peppermint (2 drops) and orange oil (1 drop) in my diffuser and it gets me going in no time.

But what if you’re flagging later in the day? No problem. Add some oil to a bath and have a quick dip! Okay, so you’ll only have that option if you are working from home. But there’s no reason you can’t have a diffuser on your work desk to use any time (you can get car diffusers too). Just make sure other people are okay with it first.

And you can add a drop to hot water for a delicious, healthy drink whenever you like. I always feel rather decadent when I sit down with a steaming peppermint mug and a piece of dark chocolate.

 

2. Boost your brain power with lemon oil

Lemon oil is fantastic at helping you concentrate. And because its main components are limonene and beta-pinene – both known for their uplifting properties – it will improve your mood and help you de-stress too.

I diffuse a few drops of lemon oil when I need to focus calmly on my work. Sometimes mixed with pine oil. Think of that cheerful, fresh scent as you stride through a coniferous wood on a spring day – it’s like that. And will banish everyday odours in a flash!

For extra brain power use lemon oil in your cooking. Although heat does make the oil lose some of its health benefits, scoffing the resultant lemon cake certainly makes me feel good!

But for something slightly healthier one drop in Greek yogurt with blueberries and a little crystallised ginger is yummy.

 

3. Supercharge your immune system with Thieves

Thieves is a blend of clove, eucalyptus, lemon, cinnamon and rosemary oils (mmm… Christmassy…) that will supercharge your immune system and promote good overall health. In 15th century France, thieves wore masks infused with the ingredients of this blend when they robbed plague victims to prevent them catching the deathly disease.

So, I love to diffuse Thieves regularly. And I’m sure I’ve warded off many bugs by gargling it at the first hint of a sore throat. Just add one drop to a tablespoon of water for an instant soothing effect.

For extra insurance, especially during the dark, illness-generating winter months, I rub diluted Thieves oil on the soles of my feet. It’s absorbed through the skin and spreads quickly to other parts of the body helping your immune system do its thing much faster.

 

While I can’t promise essential oils will banish illness, they can make you feel a whole lot better. And when used correctly they’ll help improve your workplace wellbeing

 

A word of caution

I only use pure oils without nasty chemical fillers. And I learned how to use them safely first. Don’t ever ingest something you’re not sure about and always dilute oils before applying to your skin.
