Business blogging: how often should you post?

Blogging is one of the best ways to promote your business online. You can demonstrate your expertise and engage with your customers. Build trust and relationships.

If you blog well, your business is much more likely to succeed.

But how often should you post to make it work?

Quite simply, that depends! But you should always ask these questions when deciding what’s best for your business…

 

1. How much time can you give to blogging?

There’s no point trying to write several posts a week if you don’t have the time.

When I started blogging, I decided once weekly was ideal. But with the other demands of running a business, monthly was way more realistic. So that’s where I began.

It’s better to publish quality content that engages your readers and keeps them wanting more. Even if you do have to post less often.

Would you read a boring blog just because it was frequent?

So don’t publish mediocre content for the sake of it – a regular and realistic schedule is best.

 

2. Why are you blogging?

Is it to show you’re an expert in your field? To provide useful information? To share your business news or event? Or maybe you want to boost your website’s SEO rankings…

You’re certainly more likely to get noticed by Google the more posts you publish, increasing your site traffic and leads. But Google doesn’t just look at frequency. When ranking your site content quality, length of your posts and consistency affect SEO too.

 

3. Who is your audience?

What do they need from you? What do they expect? Would your audience want an academic, in-depth post daily? Or would short, snappy posts with simple insights be better?

Even when your audience is interested in the subject, how much time do they have to read your posts?

Don’t waste your time writing uber-fantastic content only for it to be deleted straight away.

 

4. How will your audience receive your posts?

Have they signed up to a monthly newsletter sharing your latest posts so they can browse at will? Or do they get an alert as soon as you publish something? Maybe you’re relying on social media to spread the word and they won’t get annoying messages at all.

Whatever it is, consider whether they might get fed up with too much stuff in their inbox. I know I do…

 

So what is the ideal blogging frequency for your business?

Sorry, it doesn’t exist! But my questions should help you decide what’s best.

If you’re still unsure, try publishing 2-4 posts a month. Search engines will still recognise you as a site that updates regularly, and it’ll allow you to establish authority in your field. But it’s also manageable.

And keep to a regular posting schedule so your readers know when to expect your next offering. They’ll be waiting, in eager anticipation, ready to engage.

It is a delicate balancing act finding the sweet spot that works for your unique business. Publish too often and you risk annoying your readers, not enough and you won’t get noticed at all!
